After losing sight in 1983, John Hull began keeping an audio diary, a unique testimony of loss, rebirth and renewal, excavating the interior world of blindness. Following on from the Emmy Award-winning short film of the same name, Notes on Blindness is an ambitious and groundbreaking work, both affecting and innovative.

A film about mortality. We asked friends and family about their relationship with death, a topic we had not openly discussed with them before. A collection of voice notes are woven together with Super 8 footage. Filmed over the course of one month during winter in Berlin.

In an unknown time when everything is colorless, the world pale and desolate, everybody is born with similarly pale white skin. There is absolutely no sign of color in this world at all. However, one boy is born with yellowish skin. Everybody treats him like some sort of monster, and the boy lives in isolation, in the woods with his mother. The year he turns 16, the boy's depressed mother, unable to bear the seclusion, commits suicide. The boy blames himself for her death and dreams of becoming a normal pale-skinned person.

From 2019 to 2022, director Sarah Vos followed Rein Wolfs, the new director of the Stedelijk in Amsterdam, and his team as they attempt to resolve the lack of gender diversity of the museum, in which 90% of the works of art of the vast collection had been made by white men. To correct this imbalance, the museum allocated 50% of its budget to buy works by non-Western artists and diversified its hiring practices. The film documents meetings in which issues such as racial, ethnic and gender representation are addressed, as well as the adoption of appropriate language: should “sex worker” replace “prostitute” in certain titles? They conduct research in the archives of art by women artists, often not even catalogued, and work to rearrange the collection along a new thematic path to contextualize the cultural, historical and religious circumstances in which the works ware created. White Balls on Walls shows the successes and failures of this difficult process. Kukuru Misakino, an 18-year-old high school girl working in an aquarium, meets Fuuka Miyazawa, a former idol who lost her place in Tokyo and escaped. Fuuka will spend her days in the aquarium with her own thoughts in mind. However, the crisis of closing is approaching for the aquarium, as the girls explore their dreams and reality, loneliness and friends, bonds and conflicts.
